Ecotherapy

Ecotherapy is an approach to therapy that is “nature-based,” utilizing the land around us to promote our mental health and wellbeing. Connection with the outdoors is good for us, both physically and emotionally. In therapy, this might look like engaging in therapy sessions outdoors, or using ecotherapy principles in indoor or virtual therapy sessions.

Ecotherapy also entails a reciprocal relationship with the land. We recognize that we are intimately connected to the outdoors; we are nature. Caring for the earth is ultimately caring for ourselves and our community.

Ecotherapy might be a good fit for you if you have concern or worry about climate change and the future, have experienced a natural disaster, experience eco-grief or eco-anxiety, or simply want to engage in therapy sessions outdoors.

As a member of Michigan Clinicians for Climate Action, I am working to understand the health and mental health impacts of climate change and engage in behaviors that cultivate a climate in which the health and well-being of all people can thrive.
